Detailed 6 Days Kenya Safari Itinerary 2026/2027/2028

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park – First Game Drive

Wildlife You Can Expect on This Masai Mara Migration Safari
Thousands of wildebeests crossing the Mara River during the annual Great Migration safari in Masai Mara National Reserve.

Your private safari begins with an early-morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. After meeting your professional safari guide, depart southeast in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser toward Amboseli National Park. The journey passes through changing rural landscapes and usually takes approximately four to five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Arrive at your lodge or tented camp around lunchtime, check in and enjoy a freshly prepared meal. After time to rest, enter Amboseli for your first afternoon game drive. The park is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, but you may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions and numerous bird species. On a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro provides a spectacular backdrop. Return to your lodge before dusk for dinner and your first night in the African wilderness.

Accommodation: Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Kibo Safari Camp or similar
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Approximate drive: 4–5 hours
Main experience: Afternoon game drive in Amboseli

Suggested images: Elephant with Kilimanjaro; private safari Land Cruiser; Amboseli sunset.

Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Amboseli National Park

Paradise Africa Safaris

Begin the day early, when wildlife is active and Mount Kilimanjaro is often most visible. After breakfast, set out for an extended game drive across Amboseli’s open plains, acacia woodland, seasonal lakebed and spring-fed wetlands. Elephant families frequently gather around the marshes, providing excellent opportunities for close observation and photography from the vehicle.

Your guide will help you search for lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, buffaloes, hippos, giraffes and plains game while explaining the park’s ecosystem and animal behaviour. Visit Observation Hill, conditions permitting, for panoramic views across the wetlands and surrounding plains. You may return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before another afternoon game drive, or carry a picnic lunch and remain inside the park. As evening approaches, return to the lodge for dinner and a relaxed second night in Amboseli.

Accommodation: Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Kibo Safari Camp or similar
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Game-drive time: Morning and afternoon, or an extended full-day game drive
Main experience: Elephants, wetlands and possible Kilimanjaro views

Suggested images: Amboseli elephant herd; wildlife at the marsh; view from Observation Hill.

Day 3: Amboseli to Lake Nakuru National Park

14 Days Tanzania Honeymoon Safari
14 Days Tanzania Honeymoon Safari

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the journey from Amboseli to Lake Nakuru. This is the longest transfer of the safari, but it links two very different wildlife environments. The route passes near Nairobi before descending into the Great Rift Valley, where your guide may stop at a scenic viewpoint if time and road conditions allow.

Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving during the afternoon. After checking in and having lunch—or a late lunch, depending on arrival time—begin a game drive through the park. Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s best-known rhino conservation areas, offering opportunities to search for both black and white rhinos. Other possible sightings include Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, lions and leopards. The lake and surrounding woodland also attract pelicans, flamingos and many other birds. Proceed to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Approximate drive: 7–8 hours, depending on Nairobi traffic
Main experience: Rift Valley scenery and an afternoon Lake Nakuru game drive

Suggested images: Lake Nakuru rhino; Rift Valley viewpoint; flamingos or pelicans beside the lake.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

3 Days Masai Mara Great Migration tour
3 Days Masai Mara Great Migration tour

Enjoy an early breakfast followed by a morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. This second drive provides another opportunity to look for rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, lions and woodland birdlife before leaving the park. You will then travel southwest through the Rift Valley highlands and Narok toward the Masai Mara ecosystem.

The journey usually takes approximately five to six hours, with changing scenery along the way. Stop for lunch en route or enjoy a packed lunch, depending on the day’s schedule. Arrive at your Masai Mara lodge or tented camp during the afternoon, check in and prepare for your first game drive in the reserve if arrival time and park-entry arrangements permit. The Mara’s rolling grasslands support elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and several predator species. Return to camp around sunset for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Zebra Plains Mara Camp, Jambo Mara Safari Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Approximate drive: 5–6 hours
Main experience: Morning Lake Nakuru game drive and arrival in the Masai Mara

Suggested images: Lake Nakuru rhino at sunrise; drive through the Rift Valley; Masai Mara savannah.

Day 5: Full-Day Masai Mara Safari

Arusha Day Trips
Arusha Day Trips

After breakfast, depart with a picnic lunch for a full day of wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Your guide will select the most productive game-viewing areas according to recent wildlife movements and seasonal conditions. The reserve is renowned for lions, leopards and cheetahs, as well as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest and many species of antelope.

Between approximately July and October, migrating wildebeest and zebras may be present in the greater Mara ecosystem, although herd locations and river crossings cannot be guaranteed. At other times of the year, the reserve continues to provide excellent resident wildlife viewing. You may explore areas around the Mara River or other productive plains, depending on conditions. Enjoy your picnic lunch at a safe designated location before continuing the afternoon game drive. Return to camp before dusk for dinner and your final safari evening.

Accommodation: Zebra Plains Mara Camp, Jambo Mara Safari Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Game-drive time: Full day
Main experience: Big cats, plains wildlife and possible seasonal migration herds

Suggested images: Masai Mara lion pride; cheetah on the plains; wildebeest near the Mara River.

Day 6: Masai Mara to Nairobi – End of the Safari

Kenya Tanzania Safari Tour Packages
Kenya Tanzania Safari Tour Packages

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge or tented camp before checking out and beginning the return journey to Nairobi. Drive through the Masai Mara region and continue past Narok, with comfort stops made along the way. An optional visit to a local Masai village can be arranged before departure or during the morning, although this experience is not included in the standard safari price.

Lunch will be provided en route before continuing through the Great Rift Valley toward Nairobi. Arrival is normally expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic, weather and road conditions. Your guide will drop you off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. If you have an international flight on the same day, it should be scheduled late enough to allow sufficient time for the road journey and possible delays. This marks the end of your private six-day Kenya safari.

Accommodation: Not included; Nairobi accommodation can be arranged
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Approximate drive: 5–6 hours
Main experience: Scenic return journey and private Nairobi transfer

Suggested images: Masai Mara sunrise; safari guests beside the Land Cruiser; Great Rift Valley landscape.

Important itinerary note

Driving times are approximate and may change because of traffic, weather, road conditions and wildlife activity. Game-drive schedules may also be adjusted by your guide to improve the safari experience while respecting park-entry rules and confirmed accommodation arrangements.

Guide and Travel Expert Insights

“This route works especially well for first-time visitors because each destination offers something different. Amboseli is best known for elephants and possible Mount Kilimanjaro views, Lake Nakuru improves the chance of seeing rhinos, and the Masai Mara offers excellent predator and plains-game viewing.”

Early-morning and late-afternoon game drives are usually the most productive because wildlife is more active and temperatures are cooler. Keep a camera ready between destinations as wildlife sightings can occur unexpectedly.

The transfer from Amboseli to Lake Nakuru is the longest drive, so an early departure is recommended. In the Masai Mara, remaining flexible allows your guide to select game-viewing areas based on current wildlife movements rather than following a fixed route.

Expert tip: Two nights in both Amboseli and Masai Mara provide a better experience than trying to include another destination within the same six-day itinerary.
