6 Days Masai Mara Serengeti Budget Tour 2026/2027

11 Days 10 Nights

6 Days Masai Mara & Serengeti Budget Safari (2026–2027) – Real Cross-Border Experience

Is 6 Days Enough for Masai Mara & Serengeti?

Yes — but only if designed correctly.

This 6-day overland safari is one of the most efficient budget routes connecting Kenya’s Masai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti via the Isebania/Sirari border. It is ideal for travellers who want:

  • A true cross-border migration experience
  • Maximum wildlife in a short timeframe
  • A cost-effective alternative to fly-in safaris

However, it is a fast-paced itinerary with long driving days — best suited for:

  • First-time safari travelers
  • Budget-conscious couples & friends
  • Travellers prioritising wildlife over luxury

If you prefer a slower pace, consider a 7–8 day itinerary including Ngorongoro.

This 6-day Masai Mara and Serengeti safari is one of the most popular Kenya Safari Packages, combining Kenya and Tanzania. If you’re comparing options, you can also explore our Tanzania Safari Tours for extended routes.

Best Time for This Exact Route

This specific 6-day route performs best depending on migration movement:

  • July – October:
Best for Mara River crossings in the Masai Mara and the Northern Serengeti
  • December – March:
Best for calving season in Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area)
  • April – May (Green Season):
Fewer tourists, lower prices, but some roads can be muddy

Expert Tip:
If your goal is river crossings, spend more time in Masai Mara (Days 2–3).
If calving is your priority, shift focus to Serengeti South.

For detailed seasonal movements, see our full Masai Mara Migration Guide, which explains river crossings month-by-month.

What the Cross-Border Journey Really Feels Like

The Isebania/Sirari border crossing is a key part of this safari.

  • Typical crossing time: 1.5 – 3 hours
  • Includes:
    • Exit from Kenya
    • Immigration processing
    • Entry into Tanzania
  • Road conditions:
    • Kenya side: generally smoother
    • Tanzania side: rougher, dusty roads (authentic safari feel)

This is not a luxury transfer — it’s a real African overland adventure.

What “Budget Safari” Actually Means on This Tour

This is one of the most misunderstood parts — here’s the real experience:

 Accommodation

  • Tented camps or simple lodges
  • Private ensuite bathrooms
  • Hot showers (sometimes solar-heated)
  • Basic but comfortable beds

 Safari Vehicle

  • 4×4 Land Cruiser (shared or private)

  • Guaranteed window seats

 Meals

  • Breakfast & dinner at camp
  • Lunch: picnic in the park or lodge

Drive Times & Route Reality

This is a road safari, so understanding distances is key:

  • Nairobi → Masai Mara: 5–6 hours
  • Mara → Isebania Border: 3–4 hours
  • Border → Serengeti: 3–5 hours (rough roads)
  • Serengeti internal drives: long but rewarding

Longest day: Border crossing day (Day 4)

Before your trip, check our complete What to Pack for Safari to avoid missing essentials.

Day-by-Day Safari Experience

Day 1: Nairobi → Masai Mara National Reserve

Depart early from Nairobi and drive through the scenic Great Rift Valley with stops for photography. The journey gradually transitions from urban landscapes to open savannah. Upon arrival in Masai Mara, enjoy lunch followed by your first game drive. Expect sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and possibly lions. Evening light offers excellent photography opportunities.

Day 2: Full Day in Masai Mara – Big Cats & Migration

This is your prime wildlife day. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are timed for predator activity. The Masai Mara is famous for lions, cheetahs, and leopards. During migration months (July–October), you may witness river crossings. Picnic lunch allows you to maximize time inside the reserve.

Day 3: Morning Safari & Transfer Toward Border

Enjoy a final morning game drive before exiting the park. The drive toward Isebania begins, passing rural Kenyan landscapes. This day transitions you from Kenya into the Tanzania safari circuit.

Day 4: Border Crossing → Serengeti National Park

After immigration procedures, meet your Tanzania guide and continue into Serengeti. The road becomes rougher, but wildlife sightings begin immediately — often even before reaching camp. Evening game drive introduces you to Serengeti’s vast plains.

Day 5: Full Day in Serengeti – Endless Plains

Spend the day exploring central or seasonal areas of Serengeti depending on migration patterns. Expect large herds, predators, and incredible landscapes. Optional hot air balloon safari available ($580–$595 per person).

The Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, known for its endless plains and incredible wildlife density. According to TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority), the park hosts over 1.5 million wildebeest during the Great Migration.

For official park regulations, conservation details, and updated visitor information, you can visit the Serengeti National Park – TANAPA official page.

Day 6: Morning Safari & Departure

Enjoy a final sunrise game drive before departure. Transfer to your next destination (Arusha or onward travel).
