Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or first-time high-altitude hiker, this 6-day climb balances challenge with comfort, making your summit experience both memorable and achievable. Let’s dive into the day-by-day plan.
Itinerary – Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi & Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
You’ll arrive in Moshi, Tanzania and meet our expert local mountain guides and porter team. After briefing and equipment checks, we transfer to the park entrance at Marangu Gate (~1,860 m). A well-signposted trail leads through lush rainforest, home to Colobus monkeys and birds, up to Mandara Hut (~2,700 m) in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in mountain huts provide the comfort of a warm bunk bed and the chance to acclimatise gently.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut via Maundi Crater viewpoint
After an early breakfast, ascend steadily through Erica and lobelia zones to Maundi Crater viewpoint, offering broad vistas across Kilimanjaro’s north flank. From there you continue to Horombo Hut (~3,720 m). The extra altitude gain supports acclimatisation. Evening talk from our guide covers trekking strategy, safety, and sustainable mountaineering practices. Overnight in comfortable huts under clear stars.
Day 3: Acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut – optional walk to Zebra Rocks & Mawenzi ridge
Today is a lighter pace to help your body adjust. After breakfast you’ll take an optional afternoon walk to Zebra Rocks (~4,020 m) and explore the ancient volcanic terrain with your guide – ideal for photos and bird/mammal spotting. Return to Horombo Hut for an early dinner, rest, and briefing for summit night. This rest-day is a key feature that distinguishes our 6-day itinerary and boosts summit success.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Rise before dawn and start your ascent through the alpine desert zone. You’ll traverse exposed ridges, sweep past scenic viewpoints, and arrive at Kibo Hut (~4,700 m) by mid-afternoon. After lunch and rest, your guide leads you on an afternoon acclimatisation trek toward the crater rim. Return to hut for early sleep around 7pm — the early bedtime helps prepare for the midnight push.
Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Around midnight you begin your final ascent under headlamps, climbing the “Coca-Cola Route” saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. You’ll reach Gilman’s Point then continue to iconic Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) just at sunrise — capturing spectacular views across Africa’s roof. After summit photos you descend to Horombo Hut (~3,720 m) for dinner and overnight. This is your crowning achievement.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Departure
After breakfast, the trail descends through heath and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. A celebratory certificate awaits at Moshi Town. You’ll transfer to your lodge or airport for onward travel. Reflect on your success, the stunning Mount Kilimanjaro environment and the local Chagga communities you passed through. Our team ensures your departure is smooth, comfortable and respectful of the mountain’s ecosystem.

“An unforgettable summit experience — within reach!” — James & Emily, UK
We chose the 6-day Marangu Route because the hut accommodation and ‘pole-pole’ pace made the climb realistic for us. Our guide Jonas from Moshi was outstanding—he kept us motivated, monitored our altitude, and ensured porters were well-looked-after. Sunrise at Uhuru Peak left us speechless. The eco practices (solar huts, waste management) were a bonus. Highly recommend this tour!

“Professional, mindful and deeply rewarding.” — Carlos, Spain
From day one, the team felt like family. The rainforest walk up to Mandara Hut was gorgeous, and the next days were well-paced. On the summit night the crew’s calm guidance made all the difference. After returning, we learned about Chagga village support and porter welfare—this climb didn’t just take, it gave back. Five stars!

We wanted a climb that left minimal footprint—and we found it. The huts were comfortable, meals hearty, the pace gentle yet productive. Watching the sunrise at 5,895 m felt surreal. Knowing our trip supported local communities and conservation made the achievement even better. Will be back for another route.

“Tough challenge, smooth execution.” — David, Australia
I’ve done high-altitude treks before but this one stood out for its organisation, altitude strategy and comfort. The acclimatisation day at Horombo was vital. The local Tanzanian guides were friendly, expert and full of stories of the mountain. Hotel in Moshi post-climb was perfect for relaxing. Can’t think of a better 6-day climb.
